Lover of the Fancy

Early C20th American culture and dissent

The Hoods
Harry Grey

The ‘inside’ facts about syndicate crime operations and their hired killers and a shockingly fank account of mobster life. It is believed that the real name of the author was Herschel Goldberg, a Russian born emigre and that his memoir, partially factual, partially subconsciously altered, and partially fictional, was written when Goldberg was incarcerated in the Sing-Sing prison. This novel became the source for Sergio Leone’s classic film Once Upon A Time in America.
